Banter aside, these girls are dead serious

SINGAPORE – Sitting courtside after a training session at Northland Secondary School, national team-mates Nurul Baizura Abdul Razak, Vanessa Lee and Charlene Porima burst into laughter recounting one another’s habits on tour.

“Charlene spends a lot of time on her hair,” said 21-year-old Baizura.

New Zealand native Porima, 33, retaliates by recounting Baizura’s hair obsession after she got hers braided during their Africa tour last month.

Meanwhile, the duo tease Lee about her “neatness”.

Spending time on-and-off the court has clearly cemented the relationship between the trio, who share the roles of centre and wing defence in the 12-strong national squad that will do battle at the Mission Foods World Netball Championship (July 3-10) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Psychology student Baizura is the newcomer to the midcourt/defensive line-up this year, linking up with Lee and Porima who also competed in the 2007 world championship in Auckland.

Said Baizura: “Initially, my passes were horrible, and I depended a lot on Vanessa and Charlene for guidance.

“It’s definitely pressurising going from the under-21s team to the open squad, especially when I had to switch from playing purely defensive roles (goal defence, wing defence, goal keeper) to the centre position in mid-court. But they are very nice to me and have been such a great help.”

Baizura and team-mate Chen Lili, who will join the team if she gets her citizenship application approved by July 3, are the newcomers to the world championship squad named by head coach Kate Carpenter on Monday.

Lee, 27, is considering retiring after the world championship and believes her younger compatriots will be able to take over the mantle.

“It’s always good to have young people in the team because some of us will be retiring after this competition,” said Lee, who has 32 caps.

Added Porima, a detective who plays for Christchurch club Kereiu: “Baizura will be a future leader in the team and will guide the rest in mid-court.”

Tett will boost S’pore team at netball c’ships

THE provisional netball squad named by Singapore yesterday to take part in next month’s Mission Foods World Netball Championships threw up a welcome surprise.

England-based Asha Tett, who last helped Singapore win the 2005 Asian Championships, has decided to represent the Republic again, having just completed her tertiary studies.

The 25-year-old can play in three positions – goal shooter, goal attack and wing attack.

More importantly, having played with England national team players at club level, she brings a wealth of top-level nous to a team loaded with veterans like Jean Ng, Premila Hirubalan and Pearline Chan.

And, with key goal shooter Tan Hui Yan still recovering from knee injury – and her deputy, Cassandra Soh, ruled out of the tournament with a stress fracture to her left fibula – Tett’s inclusion provides much-needed boost to the thin attacking line.

Said Tett: “I’m raring to go, and obviously I have a lot of training to do to make sure that I am at my peak at the end of June. I’m very excited to come home to play for Singapore.”

Coach Kate Carpenter said they had considered her for the past 11/2 years, adding that “it was a big decision for Asha because this means she is ineligible to play for England for the next four years”.
“She knows our style of play, which emphasises quick, flat passing and crisp execution. With her versatility in three positions, we are positive that she will be a strong addition to the team,” she said.

Ng, having amassed 86 caps and participated in three previous World Championships, will captain the side for the July 3-10 tournament at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The 33-year-old said: “It’s great that we have a strong nucleus with plenty of experience. We know what it takes to play at a high international level.”

Besides the uncertain status of Tan, the team also have to wait to hear if 21 year-old goal keeper Chen Lili will be granted citizenship in time for the tournament.

The national team will continue their preparations, with the Australian Institute of Sports team as their training partners from June 17.

They will also play New Zealand and Northern Ireland in final practice matches before their first game against Botswana on July 3.

Local-born netballer back to boost attack

SINGAPORE’s netball team are set to receive a boost at the July 3-10 Mission Foods World Netball Championship here with the inclusion of Asha Tett, 25, a former England Under-21 player.

The Singapore-born goal attack/wing attack/goal-shooter has rejoined the team after last representing the Republic at the 2005 Asian Championship.

Said the 1.78m-tall player, who helped netball powerhouse England – ranked world No.3 – to a silver medal at the World Youth Championship in that year:

‘Being in the England squad… it has made me tougher and I know what sort of level I need to compete at to be consistent and successful.’

She plays for Team Bath in England’s Superleague, a semi-professional league, alongside some of the country’s top players like Pamela Cookey – the upcoming World Championship’s poster girl.

Described as a versatile player and accurate shooter by national coach Kate Carpenter, Tett is expected to play an important role in Singapore’s attack, which has been weakened by injuries.

Goal-shooter Cassandra Soh, 21, has been left out of the squad as she has a left fibula stress fracture and Tan Hui Yan, who is Singapore’s most experienced shooter with 55 caps, remains a doubt after suffering a knee injury in April.

Tett will be taking leave from her post-graduate degree course at the University of Reading to play in the championship. She will arrive only on June 30, three days before the competition starts.

Carpenter admitted that it would be ideal if Tett had more time to fit into the squad so as to avoid combination issues.

Still, she feels that Tett should be able to adapt quickly given her overseas playing experience, her calibre and her understanding of the Singapore team’s style of play.

Added Tett, who will participate in a few training sessions and two practice matches before the competition: ‘I would do as much as possible to discuss the way that my team play and what their strengths are, how they can mould me into the team rather than they trying to fit with me.’

Said team captain Jean Ng, 33, who played alongside Tett back in 2005: ‘She will definitely give us a boost and she will be a valuable part of the team. She has matured and has played for one of the top three teams in the world.’

Carpenter will be relying on an experienced defence to survive a tough Pool C against Jamaica (world No.4), South Africa (No.6), and Botswana (No.18). Singapore are ranked No.19 and are gunning for a top-12 finish in the competition.

Ng, with 86 national appearances, heads the defence alongside Premila Hirubalan, 28, with 69 caps. Both, along with other veterans like Pearline Chan and Vanessa Lee, will be playing in their final World Championship.

The team are also waiting for the citizenship confirmation of China-born goal-keeper Chen Lili, 21, in time for the competition at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The rules require a player to reside in the country she represents for a minimum of two years to be eligible or be born in the country like Tett.

The 1.96-metre tall Chen has lived in Singapore for more than a year. The current goal-keepers are Ng and vice-captain Lin Qingyi, who are both 1.74m.

Said Carpenter: ‘Chen will be crucial in stopping up-and-over balls in defence against taller opponents.’

Eight of the players named were members of the 2007 World Championship Team (Auckland, NZ) with 21 and Under players, Chen LiLi and Nurul Baizura getting their first opportunity to compete in this World Class Event. One player is still to be added to the team in the shooting area with Cassandra Soh ruled out of contention because of a recently diagnosed stress fracture injury.  This choice of player must be decided by 3rd July.

Captain Jean Ng, one of the highest capped international players heading into these World Netball Championships, at 86 caps, said “The team is very excited to be playing at home in front of family and friends and to show them the level of netball we’re involved in. There’s a depth of talent within the team and we’re confident of a credible performance.”  Alongside her will be Lin Qingyi, the 25 year old circle defender who has been selected as Vice Captain.

Although a relatively predictable side, given the recent performances against Malaysia, a surprise inclusion is former Singapore and England national shooter Asha Tett. Asha’s player biography includes representing England, the current World No.3 Team, at the World Youth Cup and Open European Championships, representing Singapore at the Asian Championships, and playing alongside Irene van Dyke for Bay of Plenty Magic in New Zealand’s National Bank Cup and Pamela Cookey for TeamBath in the Fiat SuperLeague in the UK.

Nine players remain from the gold medalist 2005 Asian Championships Team including Tett, who partnered Tan Hui Yan in the shooting circle.

The up-coming championships in Singapore will be the third time that both Jean Ng and Melbourne based Premila Hirubalan have competed for Singapore in the World Netball Championships with netball careers spanning over 12 years. Circle defender, Hirubalan who competed at the 1999 and 2007 competition, currently stands at 69 caps.  Her vast experience at major competitions will be an asset to the team going into the event.  With her agile and powerful defending technique, she will be a player to watch.

At 62 caps, Pearline Chan, who presented alongside Jean Ng at the conference that won Singapore the bid to host the competition in July, will bring her experience from numerous test series, the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and World Netball Championships in 2007 to the centre court.

Kate Carpenter, Head Coach said of the selection “All the players are very deserving of their selection. It’s an exciting team for Singapore”

Meanwhile, Netball Singapore are waiting to hear if 21 year old Goal Keeper, Chen Lili who stands at 196cm, will be granted Singapore citizenship in time for the Championship.

Preparations for the competition continue. The Australian Institute of Sport Netball Team will be based in Singapore from the 17th June as training partners for the Singapore Team. Singapore will play New Zealand’s Silver Ferns on the 30th June and Northern Ireland on the 1st July as final practice matches before the competition commences on the 3rd of July.

The Mission Foods World Netball Championships 2011 will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from 3-10 July 2011. Daily tickets for the tournament are currently available through SISTIC at www.sistic.com.sg and at SISTIC counters.

ACJC managed to stretch their lead by one more goal, making the score at the end of the 3rd quarter 30-25. The score was again tied to 38-38, forcing the game into extra time. RI had their mascot cheering their team on which ACJC had their wild and loud cheerleaders. M1 School Challenge League 2011

Results

M1 School Challenge League 2011

The M1 School Challenge League (SCL) started in 2006 with the intention of providing more court and competition time for schools who did not qualify for the National Inter-Schools Netball Championships. Many of these schools trained for a whole year and only get to play 3 games in their Zonal Championships. The M1 SCL provides these schools an opportunity to play more games, against more schools, across the 4 different zones.

Date:
21 February – 26 May 2011 (Tier 1)
21 March – 26 May 2011 (Tier 2)

Organiser: Netball Singapore

Title Sponsor: M1

‘B’ Division
St. Nicholas Girls Secondary School 35 – 16 St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School

St. Nicholas Girls edged out St. Anthony’s Canossian. As soon as the game got underway, the difference in class showed. In the 1st quarter, St. Nicholas Girls took a 12-3 lead which increased further to 19-9 at the halfway mark. When the 3rd quarter recommenced, the SNG girls went all out to narrow the score with some nice attacking play to lead 27-12. When the final whistle was blown, the score read 35-16.

‘C’ Division
Yuan Ching Secondary School 45 – 27 Yusof Ishak Secondary School

Yuan Ching netballers dominate Yusof Ishak 45-27. Yuan Ching started well in the first quarter and created a couple of turnovers to lead 11-8. The second quarter saw Yuan Ching’s Goal Attack did the business at her end of the court. Her physical presence in the semi-circle allowed her to collect lobs and to give Yusof Ishak the 21-16 lead at the half. When play resumed in the 3rd quarter, Yuan Ching started with a rather fast counterattack that gave them a point, 31-22. In the 4th quarter there was absolutely no way back for Yusof Ishak as soon as the game got underway again, taking the final score and match to 45-27.

Compliments to St. Nicholas Girls Secondary School and Yuan Ching Secondary School for winning in their respective divisions!
